Project Description

Situated on a challenging sloping site, this two-storey commercial development presented a series of complex design problems that called for both ingenuity and compassion. The project was anchored by an RSL Veterans and Family Wellbeing Centre, a facility dedicated to supporting ex-servicemen and women and their families through a range of clinical, social, and recreational services.

Designed to maximise usable floor area on a constrained site, the building's undercroft foundation responds pragmatically to the natural fall of the land, freeing the floors above to deliver a generous and well considered facility. At its heart, the RSL Veterans and Family Wellbeing Centre provides a comprehensive network of spaces tailored to the diverse needs of its community, from clinical consultation and office environments to meeting rooms, a children's art room, and a gymnasium, all oriented around a singular purpose: the holistic support of ex-servicemen and women and their families.

Articulation on a budget driven project of this nature posed a genuine design challenge. This was resolved through the interplay of contrasting irregular lines and expressive screen elements, lending the building a considered and purposeful façade without reliance on costly materiality. Robust, durable materials were selected throughout, paired with a soothing colour palette appropriate to the centre's therapeutic purpose and the people it serves.

The project was delivered with the design team initially engaged on the client side, before being novated across to a design and construct contractor, a transition that required clear documentation, strong contractor relationships, and a steadfast commitment to design intent through to completion.
