Project Description

This project represents a long-standing contract delivering retail fitouts for Kmart across Australia and New Zealand, encompassing more than 30 completed stores to date. Working client-side, the role involved close collaboration with internal stakeholder teams to deliver consistent, high-quality retail environments within compressed timeframes and strict cost parameters.

Kmart’s delivery model is driven by a rigorous focus on quality, programme certainty, and cost efficiency. In response, the architectural approach centred on the development and refinement of a repeatable, modular design framework that could be adapted across varying sites, building conditions, and regional requirements. This standardised approach enabled efficiencies in documentation, procurement, and construction, while maintaining a consistent brand and customer experience.

Each fitout required careful coordination across multiple disciplines, balancing operational requirements with evolving retail strategies and local compliance considerations. Working within live retail and brownfield environments demanded clear communication, efficient sequencing, and a pragmatic design mindset to minimise disruption and support rapid delivery.

The ongoing relationship with Kmart reflects a trusted partnership built on consistency, reliability, and a deep understanding of the client’s objectives. Through a repeatable yet flexible design approach, the project has contributed to the successful rollout of stores that are functional, durable, and responsive to both customer and operational needs, reinforcing Kmart’s presence across key retail markets.

Architectural Collaborative (whilst operating as Opus Architecture and WSP) have delivered fitouts, stand alone stores and refurbishments of various Kmart stores across Australia and New Zealand for over a decade.
