Project Description

Working for Tract Consultants, Architectural Collaborative provided the architectural design of multiple structures throughout a highly detailed and resolved landscape masterplan. Working with their landscape design and intent for architectural scale, we built upon their design theory and delivered multiple architectural features for the site.

The sound shell has been designed as two stages of differing capacities which pivot around a back-of-house area. The large primary stage faces south-west and opens toward a generous open lawn with views down onto the river. It has been created as a space for events of up to 5000 people. Meanwhile, the south-east facing secondary stage serves smaller crowds and has been designed to present a more low-key environment than the adjacent primary stage. Both platforms are housed under an undulating flyover roof, the curves of which respond to the size and ‘intimacy’ associated with each stage. Generally, the soft lines of this building are intended to be a subtle reference to the Burnett River. The form also fits neatly into the sinuous lines of the landscape design in this precinct.

The Cultural Shelter is located on the Burnett Peninsula and builds upon the idea of a place of refuge and establishment. As one of the remaining parts of the site which will remain unaffected by the floods the form is inspired by Bundaberg's sugar industry with references to the industrial aesthetic working in harmony with the landscape.

The smaller covered areas throughout the precinct are designed to reflect the architecture of the cultural shelter. The curved forms create functional, more intimate zones on both sides of the shelters and become visual extensions to the main bbq covered area
